Purple Sapphires: A Rare Treat

Sapphires that are not blue are known as fancy sapphires and may be any colour—except red (which is a Ruby). The fancy sapphire colours are pink, orange, yellow, green, purple, and violet. There truly is a different colour of sapphire to suit anyone’s taste! Unlike most blue and pink Sapphires which need to be heat treated to obtain their best colour display, natural purple Sapphires very rarely require this treatment. The colour of a purple Sapphire gem can range from a lavender purple hue to a violet colour and everything in between.

THE SCIENCE

Purple Sapphires are sometimes confused with amethysts, a variety of quartz. The abundantly common quartz registers a 7 on the Mohs scale of hardness, compared to the Sapphire’s 9, and can be easily broken, chipped, or shattered. Not only more rare, but Sapphires are more durable than amethysts to the daily knocks of life, the only material harder is diamond.

The Sapphire is natural and untreated, its cushion cut for a soft finish and 1.69cts in weight. This stunning stone will be set with this pair of quarter carat diamonds.
